Privacy policy

We examine the food industry's data practices. Ours should be able to survive the same treatment.

The short version

We collect the minimum we need to run the site: your email if you subscribe, take the quiz, or unlock the scanner (your first scan needs no email); your messages if you contact us; and label photos if you use the scanner. We never sell your data. We never will.

Who is responsible

Consumer Rising is an independent publication run by Amam. For any privacy question or request, contact [email protected] — a human reads it.

What we collect

Email address — when you join the newsletter (including through the quiz), or unlock the scanner. We use it to send what you asked for and nothing else. Subscribing is always your choice, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe.

Contact details and messages — when you use the contact form: your name, email, subject, and message, so we can reply.

Label photos — when you use the scanner. Today, photos stay on your device and are never uploaded or stored by us; automatic analysis is not connected yet. If that changes, this policy will be updated first.

Technical data — our hosting provider records basic technical info (device type, pages visited, approximate location, IP address) to keep the site running, prevent abuse, and stay secure. We use this only for operations and security — never for advertising profiles.

On your device only — your browser stores a few preferences locally (light/dark theme choice, scanner email, an offline backup of newsletter signups if our server is unreachable). This never leaves your device and you can clear it anytime in your browser settings.

Cookies

We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies. Our hosting provider may set strictly-necessary security cookies to protect the site. That's it.

Who else sees it

Two named providers help us operate, and they only get what they need:

  • Beehiiv — our email platform. Subscriber emails go here so we can send the newsletter and honor unsubscribes. Beehiiv's privacy policy governs their handling: beehiiv.com/privacy.
  • Cloudflare — our hosting and database provider. Site data (including form submissions) is stored on their infrastructure. Their privacy policy: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information — so there is nothing to "opt out" of selling. We don't run third-party advertising, so there are no ad trackers building profiles on you here. We disclose data only if required by law.

How long we keep it

Newsletter emails: until you unsubscribe and ask us to delete them. Contact messages: as long as needed to handle your request, then on request. Scanner emails: kept so the scanner remembers you; scans are unlimited. If you ask for deletion, we delete from our database and confirm — and remove you from the email platform too.

Security

Data travels over encrypted connections and lives on Cloudflare's infrastructure with their security controls. No method is 100% secure, but we keep collection minimal so there is little to lose.

Where your data lives

Our providers are US companies and data is stored in the United States. If you visit from elsewhere, you consent to that transfer by using the site.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can: unsubscribe in one click from any email; ask what we hold about you; correct it; and ask us to delete it — email [email protected] and we'll act and confirm. California residents: we do not sell personal information, so no sale opt-out is needed; you still have the rights above. EU/UK visitors: you have the same rights under GDPR, including data portability and the right to object.

Children

Consumer Rising is written for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13, and we delete it if we learn it happened.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so in the newsletter before it takes effect — not buried in fine print after. The date at the top always shows the current version.
